Found Russia ‘fascinating’

I noticed in the Travelers’ Intercom section a couple of rather negative reports of Russian riverboat experiences (March ’04, pg. 32 & April ’04, pg. 82). Having enjoyed three such trips over the past six or seven years, I would like to reassure other travelers that these trips can be exceedingly enjoyable and interesting.

Our travels to Russia were with GT Cruises (which now promotes these cruises under the name Peter the Great Cruises), and as to the ships and crews I can speak only of theirs. My wife and I always traveled on our own, but often there were tour groups aboard as well. I feel that all were treated equally well. In fact, we really preferred being “alone,” especially on our third trip. It allowed us to go off on our own ashore when it was safe and appropriate.

The facilities aboard the ships we took were very good. We found plenty of public areas where we could relax, just as there were others in which group discussions, lectures and good entertainment were available. All of the entertainment and lectures were well done.

The crew members associated with passenger care and comforts were excellent. Waitresses spoke little English but were charming. Food was excellent and nicely served, and the live background music at dinner was lovely.

The cabins were indeed small, and there were just two suites on each ship (usually reserved far in advance and well worth the additional expense).

I think the real issue is why are people traveling? What do they really expect to experience and learn? If you want a party atmosphere with little or no foreign language to handle plus pretty scenery going by at all times, go down the Rhine or somewhere similar. If you want to see and become a little part of an enormous country and its people, who are much like us but have lived for centuries under tyranny, try the Volga. If you want to see a new and fascinating culture, go to Russia. You may enjoy the challenge of learning a new alphabet (Cyrillic).

Russia is becoming a part of the West in many ways, and we found it thrilling to see over a period of five years. We found the people to be just plain wonderful. I could go on an on, but let me just say that if you are excited and stimulated at seeing a great nation that has a vivid history and yet is evolving bit by bit into a new way of life, sail the Volga and its adjoining waterways.
