Covering both the cities and rural areas of the southern end of Honshu island, my six-day, early-November ’09 tour of Japan, organized and sponsored by JTB USA, Inc., began and ended in Osaka. Throughout my journey, I was struck by both the unfailing politeness of everyone I met and the attention to detail displayed in so many aspects of Japanese life.

Starting out

I arrived in Osaka’s Kansai International Airport, which is conveniently located next to the Shin-Osaka transportation hub, where travelers can choose a bus, a taxi or even a ferry to...

As a docent at Washington, D.C.’s, Hillwood Museum, featuring fabulous Russian treasures, I have been fascinated with a trip Catherine the Great made down the Dnieper River in 1787. Accompanied by the Austrian emperor and other diplomatic guests, she led a tour of her expanding empire from Kiev to the Crimea, sailing in a fleet of 80 red-and-gold Roman-style galleys, each with its own orchestra.

So when I learned of a tour in Catherine’s wake, together with visits to the homeland of the dashing Cossacks, historic cities closed to visitors...

During our April ’10 trip to northern Thailand, my wife, Chanjira, and I visited the city of Chiang Mai. Located 700 kilometers north of Bangkok (a one-hour flight away), Chiang Mai is a charming and relaxed city with a pleasant climate — not as hot as Bangkok because of the elevation. There are lots of things to see and do there.

Where to stay

We spent four days at U Chiang Mai (70 Ratchadamnoen Rd.; phone +66 53 327 000, www.uchiangmai. com), a relatively small (41 rooms), intimate boutique hotel in the middle of the...

In the early 1970s I enjoyed reading the works of the British author R.F. Delderfield. His books were set in many places in England, but it was obvious that his real love was DEVON, where he lived. As a high school English teacher who taught British Literature, I always felt that I should visit England, but it was Delderfield’s trilogy “A Horseman Riding By” that convinced me to buy a plane ticket, rent a car and experience Britain, which I did in 1976.

In 2000 I reprised that trip for the benefit of two recently retired English teacher colleagues and four other friends. They didn’t...

An extended trip to Southern Africa: that’s what my sister Patt and I took in January and February ’03. The highlight would be a 16-day rail tour that departed from Johannesburg and took us to a total of six countries.

We began with a week in Cape Town. Because of the extreme distance, we chose to fly first class on South African Airways — $9,250 each, round trip from Atlanta to Cape Town.

We stayed at the Protea Hotel President (4 Alexander Rd.; phone 2721 434 8111 or visit www.protea-hotels.co.za) at Bantry Bay with a sweeping view of the...

When I retired a decade ago, I made a “to do” list for the rest of my life. Near the top was the phrase “learn a foreign language fluently.”

Though I had studied both French and Spanish in school, I decided to focus on Italian, since it brought back memories of my childhood when my paternal grandparents would speak to each other in Italian, occasionally arguing about the correct pronunciation of certain words (my grandmother’s relatives were from Genoa and my grandfather came from Naples).

I started my Italian lessons at a...

My wife, Connie, and I, in planning our Southeast Asia trip with our son Jon and his wife, Kendra, in late 2003, originally intended to include only Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia (the countries included in our special Cathay Pacific promotion) on our itinerary. However, the more we read, the more we wanted to extend the trip to Nepal. The very names Kathmandu, Mt. Everest and Tiger Tops conjured up our spirit of adventure. We were not disappointed.

Kathmandu

We flew Thai Airways to Kathmandu. The weather was idyllic and the...
