We were in Guatemala for 12 nights in October ’04. The travel agency we used in Antigua, Voyageur Tours (Centro Comercial La Fuente, 4a. Calle Oriente No. 14, Antigua, Guatemala, C.A.; phone [502] 832-4237, fax 4247, e-mail info@travel.net.gt or visit www.travel.net.gt/ant.html), was outstanding. We made all contacts with them through e-mail.

We worked with Patricia Barragan and Miguel, the owner. They were extremely kind and helpful, and the arrangements were excellent. They arranged all hotels, all transfers and our round-trip air to Flores (for Tikal). The price for all of this...

The upside of high gasoline prices in Sweden is that it encourages people to bike to school, work or shops. And since southernmost Sweden, the region known as Skane, has so many cyclists, it has developed an extensive system of bike lanes and trails, including converted rail lines, to accommodate them. That plus terrain ranging from level ground to rolling hills makes Sweden an unusually bike-friendly country. Another plus for travelers — English is almost a second language there.

My husband, Fred, and I have taken up cycling in our retirement, and since we have relatives in Lund we...

I write in answer to ITN’s request for information on airport self-service check-in kiosks (Feb. ’06, pg. 4). On our last trip out of Frankfurt Airport, in February ’06, we were able to use a self-service check-in kiosk to check in for our Lufthansa flight to Rome. There were several such kiosks at Terminal 1, so there was absolutely no waiting time to use them. Also, they were straightforward and simple to use.

However, for people like us wishing to check in luggage, the procedure was of little use, since we then had to join the regular queue to hand in our cases. When we enquired...

While awaiting information relative to a traveling companion who had been taken to the Wrexham hospital on May 23, ’05, my wife, Evie, and I spent several hours in the lobby of The Hand Hotel in Chirk (Church St., Chirk, Wrexham, LL14 5EY, Wales, U.K.; phone +44 1691 773472, fax 772479 or visit www.handhotelchirk.com).

We received assistance in calling the hospital, and everyone we spoke to during our brief stay in the Hand Hotel was extremely cooperative, friendly and polite. We were quite impressed.

We also had an excellent, reasonably priced lunch in the restaurant of this...

Editor’s note: The following letter refers to the January ’05 “Cruising World” column in which Dr. Lew Toulmin wrote about a woman who, in advance of a cruise, objected to signing a document authorizing the line to put a “hold” of a certain amount on her credit card to ensure there was sufficient credit to pay for her on-board expenses.

A credit hold is not a credit charge. Granted. As an experienced cruising traveler, including having taken some cruises with Holland America Line (not my favorite operator), I have never agreed to permit a hold to be placed on my credit card. Please...

My wife and I drove a rental car through Slovenia, May 20-28, ’05. We traveled from Venice and drove most of the interesting roads in Slovenia, which is full of beauty in all varieties and can be visited at a very reasonable cost.

We contacted the Slovenian Tourist Office (2929 East Commercial Blvd., Ste. 201, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33308; phone 954/491-0112) and they sent us a booklet called “The Countryside, Tourist Farms” which gave information about booking accommodations at Slovenian tourist farms, called kmetij Slovenije.

The tourist farms are rated on a scale of one apple...

Jewelry has always been my souvenir of choice on our many trips abroad. In each country, I try to find a unique gold piece that is representative of the culture and craftsmanship.

The gold and precious stone items in Thailand are irresistible. In 1998 I took a loose, 13-carat amethyst to Bangkok and had it set in a handmade, 18k gold pendant setting with a small diamond for $98.

In October ’04 my wife and I had a sensational journey through Indochina. We booked our tour through All Asia Travel Company (57-59 Do Quang Dau St., District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; tel. 848-9203493, fax 848-9203446, e-mail allasia@hcm.fptvn or visit www.allasiatravel.com).

For our party of four, our 22-day tour cost $1,800 per person and included centrally located 4-star hotels with breakfast, private car with driver, English-speaking guides, entrance fees and eight intra-Asia flights. Airfare on Korean Air round trip from New York’s JFK to Ho Chi Minh City was $950. The...
