My wife and I and four of our friends booked a cruise on the eight-person barge Horizon II of French Country Waterways (Duxbury, MA; 800/222-1236).

The seven-day cruise, May 2-8, 2010, cost $11,990 for my wife and me. This price included meals and a great selection of French wine on board, daily trips into villages, a meal in Saulieu at Le Relais Bernard Loiseau (three stars) and transportation from Paris to the boat and back.

We have done extensive traveling, but, I must say, this was our best trip ever. The crew and chef were wonderful and the food was gourmet.

While driving a leased car in Spain in the fall of 2003, I encountered the following incidents that should serve as warnings to other readers.

Driving into Barcelona on a quiet Sunday afternoon, we began to encounter “windshield washers” at the stoplights. Trapped at the lights and not having any coins or cash readily available, we tried to stop them. This happened three times at different locations.

Minutes later in the very heart of the city, my rear tire went flat. You guessed it: they had spiked the sidewall. In the heavy traffic of the city center, I parked illegally (it...

In response to Lawrence Schonbrun’s “Person to Person” question (Nov. ’09, pg. 77), using a cell phone worldwide is easy. You need just two things: a “world phone” and service.

The “world phone” is any unlocked four-band or quad-band GSM phone. (“GSM” is an industry standard, and phones with it can be used in 212 countries and territories.) Many come from China and in much of the world are called “China phones”; I’ve seen some on eBay.com for $25-$50. (ITN found these listed on eBay for $80-$250.) If your current phone is a four-band phone, it can be unlocked and used. You can do it...

Regarding “Hands Tied as Credit Limit Exceeded” (Sept. ’10, pg. 26), about a cruise passenger at sea unable to communicate with his credit card company, several years ago we converted all of our credit card bills (AmEx and two Visa cards) as well as other recurring charges, including utility bills, to auto-pay, by which each bill is automatically deducted from our checking account(s) on the due date.

We have never had to worry about being current or having overdrawn our credit limit while on longer trips. Upon returning home, we audit the credit card statement(s)...

I’m writing in response to a reader’s inquiry regarding flights that allow smoking (Oct. ’04, pg. 84).

Please be aware that smoking on airlines was not banned simply due to its being considered “socially incorrect.” My father worked in testing on aircraft for 31 years, and during the age of smoking, equipment failure was extremely high. For example, nicotine would gum up the oxygen mask release mechanisms, which caused an unacceptable percentage of them to not operate during testing and emergencies. Keep this in mind when you consider patronizing foreign airlines that have a “...

In planning for a trip to China and Nepal in October ’11 to celebrate my 50th birthday, I went online to www.airlinequality.com/main/forum.htm to determine which airline to use. Passenger reviews I found on the site rated Cathay Pacific highly, with a five-star score. On Cathay Pacific’s website, www.cathaypacific.com, I found they had nonstop flights to Hong Kong.

For me, flight schedules are as important as flight comfort. I hate layovers and always avoid them when I can. And if I’m taking a trip with a flight time of more than eight to ten hours or one where there’s a huge time...

My wife and I took an extended business trip to Cairo in October ’03. During our stay at the historic, downtown Windsor Hotel (al-Alfy Street, Cairo, Egypt — $54 for a double), which was the British Officers’ Quarters prior to the ’52 revolution, we met Samir Fayek (cell phone 011-20-12-399-5147 or e-mail samirfayek@hotmail.com).

Samir is an experienced guide who runs tours for small groups of four to six people on a half-day or full-day basis. He is extremely knowledgeable, speaks fluent English and knows how to navigate Cairo traffic expertly.

Samir took us to the City of...

My wife and I were passengers on a River Explorer cruise, beginning in Bucharest on Sept. 1, ’04, and scheduled to end in Amsterdam on Sept. 25, with Vantage Deluxe World Travel. Halfway through the trip, when the ship arrived in Vienna late on Sept. 13, we were told to leave the ship early the next day. When I asked why, the Vantage tour guide and the captain only said that my wife was slow and they were afraid she would fall.

We had paid the entire charge for the cruise to Vantage in April: $4,599 each plus $339 each for Trip Mate insurance and $318 each for port charges, etc.,...
