Four of us, who were spending the week of Thanksgiving 2003 in Budapest and Prague, were annoyed that we couldn’t escape popular American music playing everywhere. Also, while we weren’t surprised to find McDonald’s, Burger King and KFC, in Prague we were caught off guard to see pizzerias on every block.

Although it dates from Roman times, Budapest is basically a 19th-century city. Most of the public buildings, apartments and monuments date from this period.

Although we had a Budapest card that gave us a pass to the metro and trams, we used taxis during our visit because...

We participated in a week-long “working vacation” in northern England, March 27-April 3, ’04, with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, or BTCV (Conservation Centre, 163 Balby Rd., Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN4 0RH; phone 01302 572-244, fax 01302 310 167, e-mail information@btcv.org.uk).

The cost for the week was £95 (about $170) per person. This included all expenses except a dinner on our day off.

We were picked up at the Hexham train station late Saturday afternoon and returned on the following Saturday morning. We stayed at the Ninebanks Youth Hostel, near...

My husband and I took a 2-month segment of a 4-month cruise on the Saga Rose, a British ship sailing from Southampton, England. The portion of the cruise we took left Southampton on Jan. 4, ’04, and we disembarked in Sydney, Australia, on March 4. The ship returned to Southampton via South Africa.

We booked our cruise through Saga Holidays in Boston (800/343-0273). Our grade E cabin, No. 329, was central and nice.

Regarding the item on the fingerprinting of visitors to Brazil (March ’04, pg. 82), we were informed on our way to Recife that all 27 Americans on board would have...

Woman and child with faces decorated — Mandalay

Two friends and I went to Myanmar for eight days, Feb. 8-15, 2011. I really love traveling to unusual places, and this was one of the most different places I have ever been to.

We got our visas in Thailand but had to waste a day of our trip to do it. The rush cost was about $86 each. (A visa purchased in advance in the US costs $20 from the Myanmar Embassy; 202/332-3344, http://mewashingtondc.com. — Editor)

We flew to Yangon from Bangkok on Air Asia — a one-hour flight and not expensive ($75-$80 each).

We had arranged for a private guide after seeing a review by ITN...

Our horse carriage takes us through the crowded streets of Granada’s markets.

My husband and I spent a lovely week in Nicaragua, Nov. 10-18, ’03.

We were met at the Managua International Airport by our guide, Cristian Quintanilla, and driver, Luis. We had made all the arrangements for this trip by e-mail with Cristian (e-mail jbfuntoursni@yahoo.com) and were very pleased with them all.

For two persons for five days (plus airport transfers for two other days), and including excellent balcony rooms in the Hotel Alhambra as well as the Hotel Austria, many meals, all tours and private English-speaking guide plus car and driver, the cost (not including...

We traveled to Sri Lanka primarily to see the Kandy Nawah Maha Perahera, the Pageant of Kandy, an absolutely exciting procession honoring the relic of the tooth of Buddha. This festival is held for about 10 days, with the last day falling on the first full moon in August (for 2012, July 23-Aug. 2). We attended the procession on the eighth night. The streets were packed and there was a carnival atmosphere. Then the procession began, with men cracking whips as they walked down the street. They were followed by bands with drums beating and horns blowing. There were dance troupes with dancers...

The annual Open House London weekend provides an opportunity to see buildings in the city which have significant architectural value but which are not normally open to the public. Admission is usually free. The 2012 event will be held Sept. 22-23.

During the September 2011 event, I was able to visit White Lodge in Richmond Park and learned that visits to part of the lodge are possible throughout the year on certain days of the week by prior arrangement through the Royal Ballet School (phone +44 020 8392 8440, e-mail museum@royalballetschool.co.uk), which now occupies the building...

Seventeen of us, friends and family, followed the wildebeest migration in Tanzania, June 30-July 12, 2011, and it was the trip of a lifetime. We traveled with Africa Dream Safaris (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; 877/572-3274).
