Travelers' Intercom

My family (two adults and a child) traveled to Panama, June 18-July 1, 2009, having utilized EcoCircuitos (Hotel Country Inn & Suites, Ground Floor, Ste. 3, Amador, Pelican Ave., Amador Causeway, Panama; phone +011 507 314 0068, vwww.ecocircuitos.com) to arrange a custom trip for us.

The cost was roughly $7,000 for three people and included domestic airfares, ground transfers, many of the meals, guides (except in Bocas del Toro) and entry fees. We went to Panama City, Boquete, Bocas del Toro and San Blas.

EcoCircuitos was fantastic, taking care of every detail and...

My friend Sue and I, both in our eighties, are always looking for a destination to which neither of us has been. Therefore, we were delighted when our travel agent recommended a cruise on the Douro River, which originates in northern Spain and flows west across the northern part of Portugal into the Atlantic at the city of Porto.

We booked the cruise through Uniworld (Los Angeles, CA; 800/733-7820) and on May 26 flew to Lisbon. We spent three nights in that charming city, then were bused north to Porto, where we boarded the Douro Spirit, our home for the next seven days, May 29-June...

My wife, Joan, and I travel all the time, and on some of those trips we use tour companies, but we also fly independently and book tours once we arrive at our destination. We find either option acceptable, although I suppose it does depend on one’s comfort zone.

Even when we book a tour, we tend to book our own flights, because we both are “Platinum Medallion” frequent flyers with Delta (multiple years), fly 100,000 miles a year and have “Million Mile” status with the airline. I have found that there is more flexibility if the flights are handled on my end, separately from the tour...

I read the letters on “coping with medical needs overseas” in the March, April and May ’11 issues. I am 81 and, after my having prostate cancer for 20 years, in May 2010 the cancer became active, causing both inability to urinate and then incontinence, mainly during daytime hours.

A traveler, I flew to Frankfurt from Cleveland in September ’10 by US Air economy class and spent 10 days with a former exchange student, now a doctor, in Kehl, Germany. I then drove to Munich and went with friends by car to Croatia to spend a week with them in a private home in the Istria area.

When my spouse, Isolde, and I visited Spain in May ’08, the AeroCity shuttle (phone +234 91 747 75 70, www.aerocity.com), at €21 (near $28) for two persons, was a convenient way to get from the airport to our accommodations.

We stayed at Hotel Europa (Calle del Carmen 4, 28013 Madrid; phone +34 915 212 900, www.hoteleuropa.net), located just off Puerta del Sol, and paid €100 ($132) for a superior double room. We were very pleased with the modern, clean room and the accommodating staff. The adjacent hotel café was a plus for both breakfasts and people-watching. From the hotel, it was...

In the letter “Scoping Out Bargain Airfares Online” (June ’09, page 15), the writer runs through an interesting litany of what he had to go through to achieve a reasonable air travel expense from Los Angeles to the Philippines.

I applaud his diligent work, however I have learned to deal with equally challenging air travel arrangements by relying on my travel agent, Cheri Schwartz of Tubby Lohmer’s Travel (1826 Tower Dr., Stillwater, MN 55082; 651/439-3522, e-mail cheri@tubbystravel.info).

Ms. Schwartz has access to better flight information and fares than I do, and her $50...

I feel it is necessary to add my thoughts to the subscriber’s letter “Hints for Haggling” (May ’11, pg. 15).

We took the trip “Amazon & Inca Adventure” with GAP Adventures (Toronto, Ontario, Canada; 888/800-4100) in June ’10. At the start of the tour, our group leader, Andreas, went over many things, including bargaining. He made some points which I think everyone who travels, especially to Latin America, should consider.

Selling their crafts or other goods is the livelihood and sole source of income for many of the people you are buying from; they are clearly not...

When my nephew, Jim, and I traveled to Peru in July ’10, I followed the advice I’d read in ITN (Aug. ’09. pg. 24) and purchased a new pair of glasses in Lima. At Optica Santa Lucia (Calle Schell 365, Miraflores), I paid $220 for bifocals with Italian frames. I took a prescription with me, ordered the glasses and picked them up the next day.

En route to get the glasses, we happened to see the office of Fertur Travel (Calle Schell 485, Miraflores, Lima; phone [+51 1] 242 1900 or 445 1760 or, in US, 877/247-0055) and decided to have them set up our tour.

We were well pleased...
