Pablo Picasso sculpture on Lake Vänern near Kristinehamn, Sweden

The location of the subject in February’s photo is the shore of Lake Vänern near Kristinehamn, Sweden. Pictured is a 15-meter-tall sculpture imagined by Pablo Picasso and built by Norwegian artist Carl Nejsar in 1965. Its steel frame was filled with small stones and concrete, and the exterior patterns then were created through sand blasting. The sculpture is a portrait of Picasso’s wife, Jacqueline. (From another angle, the sculpture resembles a face in profile.)

The Leshan Giant Buddha
The subject of December’s photo, the Leshan Giant Buddha, which sits at the confluence of the Mingjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in China's Sichuan province, is the world’s largest carved-stone Buddha.

St. George by Catalan artist Josep Maria Subarichs

Pilgrims have been making the trek up Our Lady’s Hill to the Shrine in Montserrat, Spain, for centuries, but it wasn’t until 1986 that the subject of August’s photo was installed near the top of the path.

It’s a sculpture of St. George by Catalan artist Josep Maria Subarichs (b. 1927). Subarichs is best known for carving the Passion Façade at Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona.

January’s photo depicts Trakošćan Castle, near Krapina in northern Croatia. Built more than seven centuries ago as an observation fortress to monitor the road from Ptuj to Bednja Valley, it underwent numerous changes of ownership and purpose and was restored in the 19th century in the Romantic tradition as a manor house surrounded by pleasure grounds.

The subject of February’s photo is “Dromeas,” aka “The Runner,” a 30-foot-tall sculpture of glass stacked on iron by Kostas Varotsos. Commissioned by the City of Athens, Greece, and built from 1988 to 1994, it was displayed in Omonia Square before concerns about vibrations from the metro beneath it encouraged city officials to move it to its present site in front of the Hilton Athens on Vassi­lissis Sofias Avenue.

July’s photo depicts the Chouara Tannery in Fes, Morocco. Barbara McIntosh of Roseville, California, who contributed the photo, wrote, “The tannery has been in use since medieval times. With the natural dyes in reds, yellows and blues, the mud-brick vats are beautiful.
