Central America with Overseas Adventure Travel
I had some concerns about crime in Guatemala after reading reports in ITN and other publications about bandits and attacks on tourists. I hope these reports do not discourage people from visiting this country. My friend Roni and I never felt unsafe or threatened on the 14-day “Route of the Maya” tour that we took with Overseas Adventure Travel (Box 3167, Boston, MA 00241; 800/221-0814 or www.oattravel.com), May 8-21, ’05.
Tourist sites, banks and stores all had armed guards, which also made us feel secure. The guide did suggest to some people who wanted to hike in the countryside on our free day in Antigua that they go to the police station to request a guard to accompany them.
We had previously taken the OAT “Real Affordable Peru,” and after visiting Incan sites we were looking forward to exploring the Mayan ruins. “Route of the Maya,” an excellent tour, covered Mayan sites in EL SALVADOR, HONDURAS, GUATEMALA and BELIZE.
Including fees, tax and insurance, the tour price was $2,310 from Dallas. 2005 was the first year for OAT to operate this tour, and there were a few glitches which I am sure will be corrected on later tours.
Early May was a perfect time to visit, with only a few early afternoon showers. The food was good, the accommodations were excellent and the small group of 16 was perfect. Fernando, our guide, was one of the best we’ve had on any tour. Now if only OAT offered an Aztec tour!
