Transportation from London Heathrow Airport to Southampton

I am flying to London and then need to go to Southampton port to start a cruise. What is the best procedure for taking a bus from London Heathrow to Southampton? Would it be better to stay in a London hotel or a Southampton hotel the night before the cruise & which ones? Many thanks for your replies.

Do you start the cruise the day after you arrive in the UK? If so, I would stay in Southampton and not bother with going into London and out again.
