The newest member of the European Union, Croatia, was officially admitted on July 1, 2013. No new members had been admitted since 2004, and this brings the total number of participating nations to 28.

The remaining candidate nations in Europe being considered for membership are Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey. Three potential candidates are not yet in the process: Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
