Burj Khalifa, at 828 meters (2,717 feet) the world’s tallest building, opened in downtown Dubai on Jan. 4. On Level 124 it has the world’s highest outdoor observation deck, At The Top, with panoramic views of the city, desert and ocean.

The At The Top experience (open 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday and 10 a.m. to midnight Thursday-Saturday) includes a multimedia presentation and lasts about one hour. Tickets are time-stamped at 30-minute intervals, on specific days, to manage crowds.

The home of the English pottery industry and of the Staffordshire Hoard gold artifacts, Stoke-on-Trent, England, is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2010. The city’s tourism board (Victoria Hall, Cultural Quarter, Stoke-on-Trent City Centre ST1 3AD; phone 01782 236000) has organized exhibitions, talks and walks.

Currently, members of Delta Air Lines’ SkyMiles program earn frequent-flyer miles based on the distances they travel, but under the new program starting in 2015, the number of miles earned will be based on the cost of the ticket.

The changes will most reward those who fly less often on costlier trips. It also will benefit those who book trips on short notice and cannot take advantage of bargain tickets.

For a one-day pass to Jordan’s Petra Archaeological Park, the entry fee rose by 50% on March 1 and will jump another 50% on Nov. 1, 2010 — a rise from JD40 on Jan. 1 to JD90 (near $127) at year’s end.

Fees may be paid only in Jordanian dinars, with no credit cards accepted. Fees for overnight visitors also go up in November (ex., from JD33 for one night to JD50).
