The free guide “Stay on a Farm 2004” lists more than 1,100 farms in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland offering bed and a hearty breakfast at an average cost of £25 (near $46) per person per night. The majority have en-suite bathrooms, and many provide an evening meal.

Visitors to Kuwait from the U.S., Western Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand now can obtain entry visas upon arrival rather than have to secure them in advance.

In 2012, York celebrates its 800th year as a city. On July 9, the date when York’s royal charter was granted, choirs and musicians will perform a specially commissioned musical piece at the Eye of York, a lawn by the city’s 18th-century administrative buildings.

Malta’s “In Guardia” parade reenacts the historical inspection of Valletta’s fort and garrison by the Grand Bailiff of the Order of the Knights of St. John. During the 40-minute show, the fort’s garrison, some 70 participants in full regalia, demonstrate a range of military drills from the era.

South Korean and North Korean officials have agreed to open two cross-border roads (the Seoul-Sinuiju road and one in the east) and to make test runs on the linked sections of two railways no later than October 2004.

They also are working on a joint industrial park project, with garment plants and other labor-intensive businesses, to be run by the South Koreans.

North Korea will be provided with a loan of 400,000 tons of rice “out of brotherly love and the principle of mutual help.”

Celebrating the 500th anniversary of King Henry VIII’s accession to the throne, Hampton Court Palace, London, opened on June 28 a permanent exhibition telling the story of his early reign. There are historic paintings from the Royal Collection plus audiovisual and hands-on displays.

The Swiss Knife Valley Visitor Center (Bahnhofstrasse 3, 6440 Brunnen, Switzerland) in Brunnen features information on scenic spots nearby plus a multimedia presentation on how Victorinox Swiss Army knives are made. (The knife’s ancestor was patented in 1897.) A museum as well as a store offering regional specialties and Victorinox products are on the ground floor.

Scheduled to open in Berlin in June 2004 is an exhibition of works by photographer Helmut Newton, who presented 1,000 of his photographs to the city in October ’03.

Newton was born in the German capital in 1920 and studied photography there before he left Nazi Germany in 1938. He died in a car crash on Jan. 23, 2004, in Los Angeles, where he spent winters away from his summer home of Monte Carlo.
