The AMET Majesty, the first cruise ship registered in India and flying the Indian flag, took her maiden voyage in June 2011 from Chennai, India. The 35-year-old ship was previously owned by Star Cruises and has been refurbished.

Carrying up to 1,000 passengers, AMET Majesty currently runs weekend and overnight cruises from Chennai, five-day cruises between Chennai, India, and Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, and a 10-day Chennai/Port Blair/Phuket/Chennai cruise.

The central London location of Hertz (35 Edgware Rd., London; phone 0843 309 3049) is offering rentals of electric bicycles, which increase pedalers’ speed. They are powered by rechargeable batteries that last for a day of riding. For multiday rentals, an ordinary wall outlet can recharge the battery.

A bike can be rented for £19.99 (near $28) per day, which is less than the full-day fee of £51 ($72) with the city’s bike-sharing program.

In the Auvergne region in south-central France, the museum L’Aventure Michelin (32 rue du Clos Four, 63 100, Clermont-Ferrand, France; phone +33 [0] 4 73 98 60 60) is dedicated to the more than 120-year history of the Michelin tire company.

With horse-drawn carriages and old bikes, cars and aircraft on display, exhibits show how the Michelin brothers used rubber to craft tires. Day tours of historic locations under the city of Berlin are offered by Berliner Unterwelten (Brunnenstrasse 105, 13355 Berlin, Germany; phone +49 0 30 49 91 04 17).

Among six guided tours are “Dark Worlds,” exploring a bunker from WWII, and “Breaching the Berlin Wall,” looking at tunnels, subways and empty sewers once used by those fleeing East Germany.

As of Feb. 9, 2011, the departure tax charged to passengers on international and domestic flights departing Ecuador is included with other taxes in the price of the airline tickets. (Out of Quito, the tax is $40.80 and from Guayaquil, $29.78.) Previously, passengers had to separately pay the departure tax in cash within the airport.

Australia Rail Plus passes allow unlimited travel during a three- or six-month period, including travel on trains like The Ghan and The Sunlander.

Four passes focus on Australia’s east coast, with routes between Melbourne and Cairns, while four others cover tracks heading west or north. They range from the Backtracker Rail Pass (three months, US$301 per adult, or six months, $422) to the Ausrail Pass (three months, $716, or six months, $980).

The 36-kilometer-long cave, part of which is 60 meters high and 30 to 150 meters wide, contains numerous limestone formations. Guided tours along a 1.1-kilometer walkway inside the cave cost VND120,000 (near $6).

Pack For A Purpose, a nonprofit founded in 2009, suggests that travelers to any of 100-plus destinations on five continents pack at least five pounds of helpful supplies in their luggage to be delivered to a community in need.
