Travelers' Intercom

In January ’04 we took a self-directed trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and to Montevideo and Punta del Este, Uruguay. We experienced a delightful and safe adventure at a very reasonable price.

In Buenos Aires we stayed at Hotel Lafayette (Reconquista 546, Buenos Aires, Argentina; phone 011-54-11-4393-9081 or fax 011-54-11-4393-2728), located only a short distance from the major walking/shopping street Lavalle. The price for a deluxe double at this 4-star hotel was $43 per night...

Those of you with American Airlines frequent-flyer miles should watch for a possible scam coming through by e-mail. The message states that American Airlines AAdvantage is having difficulty posting miles due to an incorrect AAdvantage number. The recipient is to reply to the e-mail address — but it is not an American Airlines address.

I foolishly opened the e-mail, but I did not reply.

I called American Airlines to inform them of this. The representative said it would be...

If your trip is going to cover three weeks or more, here is an option which guarantees no film damage by x-ray machines at airports.

Take an inexpensive, empty 35mm camera. Wait until you arrive and then purchase a couple of 24-print rolls. Have your film processed as you use it at one of the plentiful one-hour Kodak kiosks. Keep one roll ahead as you go.

No pleading with rigid airport inspectors who lie to you about the possible film damage their x-ray machines will cause. No...

I read the reader’s letter “Wildly Varying Cruise Fares Irksome” in the January ’04 issue. I have been on 39 cruises with various lines. As Bill Bennett put it (page 27), “cruise lines vary their prices according to demand.” I agree that is true. I have booked both early and late, and even though I am a past passenger with various lines I must be there at the right time to get the deals. I believe you just luck out unless you are in the know.

A “low-budget-cruise junkie,” I try to...

I would like to identify my traveling credentials before giving you my thoughts on the controversial subject of tipping.

I have traveled to 161 of the nations on ITN’s “Official List” and 248 of those on the Travelers’ Century Club list. I have set foot on 197 islands (not boasting, just identifying). I was a traveling salesman in Northern California for 15 years, attending dozens and dozens of conventions, so I have stayed in hundreds of hotels and motels and eaten in jillions of...

On Feb. 3, ’04, as a traveler with the “Tango and Samba” group of smarTours (800/337-7773), I entered Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, coming from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Our Varig Brazilian Air planeload lined up at the usual passport control. All other nationalities were taken out of the line to other passport windows where they passed through very quickly. The Americans were told to wait in front of a closed window.

Twenty-five minutes later the window opened and, very slowly, our...

The article on Easter Island in the March ’04 issue was excellent. We enjoyed our visit there a few years ago.

The sentence that caught my eye was the one in which the author said the people there are honest. We felt that way too, when we stayed at Hotel Otai, until we were robbed. The screen on our window was slit, and money, travelers’ checks, flashlights, boots and other personal items were stolen.

The hotel did have a safe, but who would expect to have their boots and other...

For travelers who have extra time in Bangkok, Thailand, I’d like to pass along a wonderful shopping contact. If you’re looking to have something framed and are tired of paying “more for the frame than the artwork,” contact Thai Thong Art Gallery (1346 New Road, Bangkok; e-mail jittibophit@yahoo.com), owned by Ajit and Malee Jittibophit.

Their prices are very reasonable. A few years ago I had 10 small textiles from the gallery framed and shipped by Federal Express for about $500 (...
