Seeing evil monkeys in Delhi

With half a million new residents each year, New Delhi, India, is sprawling into the natural habitats of Rhesus macaques, and now the monkeys are moving into neighborhoods and wreaking havoc.

They have ransacked apartments and even the office of the Ministry of Defense, scattering secret files outside. In the Shastri Park neighborhood, monkeys have bitten several people. They have even attacked patients being rolled into the hospital, taking IV bottles to drink the fluids.

The Supreme Court has ordered the city to relocate the monkeys, but progress has been slow. Six states in North India have refused the animals. Killing them is unacceptable; Hindus revere the monkeys as manifestations of the god Hanuman and feed them.

The total monkey population in Delhi is estimated at 10,000 to 20,000.
