Innovative Immersion Tours

I have taken several tours with Innovative Immersion Tours (11664 National Blvd., Ste. 277, Los Angeles, CA 90064; 916/709-3249, www.iitours.com), most recently to Bali, Indonesia, June 17-July 2, 2009.

This one was called “Island of the Gods: Bali.” The value for the money was outstanding, and most expenses (meals, tours, entrance fees, etc.) were included. Including airfare from San Francisco on Singapore Airlines, it cost $2,850 plus a single supplement of $350.

The owner of the company, Mellissa Withers, often leads the groups and was the leader on our tour to Bali. Having lived there for 15 months, she speaks the language and understands the culture well.

The customer service from all of their tour escorts has always been superb. They’ve gone above and beyond what I’ve found anywhere else. On the Bali tour, Ms. Withers made arrangements for people who wanted to see special local healers or get massages. She also hired a local artist to come to our hotel as a surprise and give everyone henna tattoos.

Mellissa accompanied us to the market and negotiated fair prices for our souvenirs. And she always showed up at the different venues early to make sure we got prime seating for shows, dinners, etc.

But what I have enjoyed most about the tours was the focus on participating in the local culture and events. We experienced things that most tourists do not have the opportunity to see or do, which makes the trips unique.

For example, in Bali we were able to go to a temple ceremony and visit some remote villages; these were trip highlights.

Many of her trip participants are “repeaters,” people who have traveled with her before. I recommend Innovative Immersion Tours.
