Day trip to Mont-St-Michel

This item appears on page 53 of the December 2010 issue.

For a week’s stay in Paris, Feb. 27-March 6, 2010, I found the Paris Métro system just excellent.

There were long lines of tourists trying to comprehend the ticket machines plus long lines of people buying tickets from humans. It seems that all the manned ticket booths are being replaced by machines. I carried a copy of the reader’s letter “Buying Paris Métro & Bus Tickets” (Nov. ’09, pg. 12), just in case.

I went on an excellent, one-day trip to Mont-St-Michel from Paris for €166 (near $231) with Gray Line. I’d been told it was impossible to do in one day, but with Gray Line I was successful.

We started at 7 a.m. and ended at 9 p.m., eating at a very nice restaurant with a view of the abbey and having a great tour, including time for shopping. It was worth every penny just for the wonderful drive. The tour is given in English only a couple days a week, however.

I booked the Gray Line tour at the tourist information desk at Gare de l’Est (rail station) in Paris. I was also able to buy all my Métro tickets there. They were extremely nice, helpful and kind to me.
