Child’s flight harness

This item appears on page 40 of the September 2014 issue.

For a young child on a plane who may be more safe with something other than a seat belt meant for an adult, extra security is offered with the Child Aviation Restraint System (CARES).

Comprising straps and buckles weighing one pound and able to be packed flat or bundled into a 6-inch-tall bag, CARES can be used on window and center seats but not in exit rows. There is no minimum age to use the harness, but children must be between 22 and 44 inches tall and weigh at least 22 pounds.

A similar harness for “special needs” flyers taller than 58 inches is available but requires an exemption letter from the FAA for use. Either size of harness may be purchased for $74.95 (plus at least $13 for shipping) by calling 800/299-6249 or visiting kidsflysafe.com for a list of stores.
