Ghana cholera outbreak

This item appears on page 18 of the November 2014 issue.

More than 10,000 cases of cholera have been documented in Ghana since May 2014, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people. Most of the cases have occurred in urban areas, including the capital, Accra, where waste disposal is lacking.

The disease, which causes extreme dehydration, is contracted through ingestion of food or water contaminated with human feces. If caught early, the disease is easily treated with antibiotics and rehydration.
