I travel overseas about three times a year. I don’t usually write reviews, but when I do, it’s because it’s an exceptional hotel or place.

I stayed for one night in Casa El Edén (Calle Esmeraldas Oe 3-30 y Guayaquil, Quito 170401, Ecuador; phone +593 2 228 1810, www.casaeleden.com) on Dec. 30, 2014.

Situated in the heart of Quito, this excellent hotel is a 5-minute walk from the Central Market and the spot where people meet for the city’s free walking tours.

From the outside, Casa El Edén looks like a museum. The front of the building was renovated in 2013 and looks brand new. The hotel has an enclosed atrium in the center courtyard, with an airy feel. It felt great just looking up at the glass pyramid on top of the courtyard.

There are four guest rooms on the second floor, two on the third. The owners live on the third floor.

Having a ceiling possibly two stories high, my room was huge and very clean, with a large comfortable bed, a fluffy comforter, thick high-thread-count towels, a modern shower and a heater. My room had a balcony, but the rooms on the third floor didn’t, and just outside was a small library. The cost was $130, which included all taxes and breakfast.

The owners, Mario and his wife, treated me like their family. Mario was very friendly and helpful and gave me directions to all the places I wanted to visit. He also offered suggestions for fine dining.

I wish I could have stayed longer than one night.
