Sydney hostage deaths
This item appears on page 17 of the March 2015 issue.
On Dec. 15, Man Haron Monis, a man claiming to be allied with the Islamic State (ISIL), took 18 people hostage at a Lindt Chocolate Café in Sydney’s business district. Monis told authorities that Australia was under attack from ISIL and that he had planted bombs throughout Sydney. Both claims were found to be false.
After nearly a day of negotiations, police stormed the café after Monis was seen shooting and killing a hostage. During the operation, Monis and one hostage were killed. An investigation found that the hostage killed during the siege had been killed by fragments of police bullets.
