In school in 1951, I loved Greek history, so I was thrilled when my dad got orders to go to Athens for three years.

Soon after we got a house, etc., I asked him if we could go to Sparta, so he consulted some Greek friends at the American Embassy.

One of them said, “I’m sorry, Colonel Sartain, but you can’t go to Sparta.”

My dad instantly thought that there was still fighting going on or the Communists were there or that there was lots of unrest.

The Greek friend continued his sentence with “No roads.”
