New Zealand Art Deco fest

On the southeastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand, Napier was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and rebuilt in the popular style of the time, Art Deco, thus the small city of 65,000 has one of the largest concentrations of Art Deco buildings in the world.

The Tremains Art Deco Festival, held there each year in the third week in February, whisks visitors back to the 1920s and ’30s and celebrates everything Art Deco. The 29th edition, Feb. 15-19, 2016, will have over 200 events and activities, including a Great Gatsby-themed picnic, prohibition parties, walking tours, vintage car tours and vintage railcar rides.

Year-round, a walking tour costs, per person, NZD18-NZD20 (near $13-$15), group, or NZD90-NZD115, private. A vintage car tour costs NZD90 for 45 minutes or NZD175 for 75 minutes.
