At least 23 Egyptian soldiers were killed and another 26 were injured in northern Sinai on July 7 when two military checkpoints near the Gaza Strip were hit by car bombs. The militant Islamist group Daesh (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attacks. In response to the bombings, an Egyptian air strike was launched on Daesh fighters in the region, reportedly killing more than 40 militants.

On July 14, a man described as a “Daesh supporter” attacked six German tourist women at the Egyptian Red Sea resort town of Hurghada, killing two and injuring four others. The attacker was arrested at the scene.
