Clashes in Jerusalem
Two Israeli soldiers were killed by three Arab Israeli gunmen near the al-Aqsa mosque, or Temple Mount, on July 14. The gunmen were killed by Israeli forces at the site.
After the attack, Israel installed metal detectors at the entrance to the mosque, to try to prevent weapons from being smuggled in, and limited entry to people over the age of 50. In response, there were protests throughout Jerusalem and the West Bank.
On July 27, Israel removed the metal detectors and all restrictions to visitation. Protests continued, however, during which at least 136 Palestinians were injured as were four Israeli police officers.
In addition, three Israeli settlers were stabbed to death by a Palestinian in a West Bank settlement and two Palestinians were killed by security forces.
