Crime in Mexico

In Acapulco, Mexico, four people were killed in a gang shootout on Aug. 14. As of press time, there had been more than 400 reported murders in Acapulco in 2017, second in Mexico only to Tijuana, with more than 700 reported murders in 2017, mostly drug-gang-related. The month of June was the deadliest month in Mexico in 20 years, with at least 2,234 murders reported across the country.

The US Department of State warns of the risk of traveling to certain states of Mexico due to the activities of criminal organizations in those areas. The areas specified by the DOT are Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua (specifically, Ciudad Juárez), Coahuila, Colima, Durango, Estado de México (specifically, the municipalities of Coacalcod e Berriozábal, Ecatepec de Morelos, Nezahualcóyotl, La Paz, Valle de Chalco Solidaridad, Ixtapaluca and Tlatlaya; Mexico City is not covered under the advisory), Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit (noncoastal cities), Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tamaulipas.
