The US Department of State continues to warn that Pakistan is experiencing terrorist violence. Evidence suggests that some victims of terrorist activity have been targeted because they are Americans.

In the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of northeastern Pakistan, an improvised explosive device placed in a marketplace in the Kurram Valley killed at least 25 people and injured at least 87 others on Jan. 20.

On Feb. 13, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb outside the Punjab Assembly in Lahore, killing at least 14 people and injuring at least 87, and on Feb. 16 another detonated his device in the Sufi shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, killing at least 88 people and injuring more than 350.

Terrorists and criminal groups in Pakistan have also resorted to kidnapping for ransom.
