Indonesia earthquakes

A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Lombok on July 29, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 330.

The quake caused a number of landslides to occur on Mount Rinjani, a popular hiking spot, blocking routes down the mountain. Indonesian authorities air-dropped supplies to more than 800 hikers who had become stranded. All of those hikers were rescued within a few days.

On Aug. 5, a stronger earthquake, measuring 6.9, struck near the epicenter of the July 29 earthquake, killing at least 98 people and injuring more than 200 others. More than 20,000 people were evacuated from western Lombok and nearby Bali as well as from the Gili islands, popular tourist spots just off the coast of Lombok, where a number of hotels were badly damaged.
