On the northern portion of the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, on Sept. 28, one person was reported to have been killed and about 10 people were injured when a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Donggla.

Roughly three hours later, a 7.5-magnitude quake occurred in the same area, triggering a tsunami measuring up to 6 meters tall that struck the western coast of Sulawesi and caused massive damage to the city of Palu. At press time, 844 people were known to have been killed, with many more still missing. Some communities had not yet been reached for an assessment of the damage.
