Bahamas hit by hurricane

Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas on Sept. 1 with sustained winds of over 100 miles per hour and gusts up to 185. Due to atmospheric conditions, the hurricane remained over the Bahamas for more than 48 hours. At least 53 people were killed, but more than 1,300 people remained missing as of press time and were assumed dead. Multiple communities were destroyed, mostly on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island, leaving thousands homeless.

Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau returned to operation shortly after the hurricane, as did all of the cruise ports in the city. The island of New Providence, home to the majority of the nation’s hotels and resorts, was not significantly affected by the hurricane.
