Knitting museum in Norway

This item appears on page 37 of the July 2019 issue.

On the shore of Salhusfjord en, near Bergen, a former textile mill (1859-1989) now houses the Norwegian Knitting Industry Museum (Salhusvegen 201, 5107 Salhus, Norway; phone +47 55 25 10 80, www.muho.no/en/the-norwegian-knitting-industry-museum).

A visit begins with a film about the factory, including interviews with former workers. On a guided tour, visitors see antique knitting machines producing scarves and socks to be sold in the gift shop.

Each year on the last weekend of September, the museum hosts the 3-day Bergen Knitting Festival, with talks, workshops and vendors. Visit bergenstrikkefestival.com/information-in-english.

The museum is open from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Entry costs NOK90 (near $10). Tours, in English, are held hourly.
