Numismatics, Germany

This item appears on page 57 of the May 2019 issue.

The Münzkabinett in Berlin, Germany, has one of the largest numismatic collections (coins and tokens) in the world, and among its more than 540,000 objects are medals, paper currencies and medieval seals. The Münzkabinett, itself, can be visited only for scholarly work; however, thousands of its items are put on display in museums on Berlin’s Museumsinsel (Museum Island).

Until Oct. 27, 2019, one of those museums, the Bode-Museum (www.smb.museum/en/museums-institutions/bode-museum/home.html), has the exhibit “The Münzkabinett Turns 150,” telling stories of people who gathered and curated the collection and of researchers and patrons.

Bode-Museum is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Tues.-Wed. & Fri.-Sun., and 10-8 Thurs.12 (near $13.50). A ticket to all six museums on the island costs 18.
