China wary
The Department of State reports a heightened risk that extremist groups will conduct terrorist acts within China in the near future. Travelers are advised to be alert at all times, including at hotels, in restaurants, on public transportation and where there are demonstrations and other large-scale public gatherings.
Authorities have increased security in China’s airports, implementing tighter restrictions. On any flight out of Beijing, passengers are prohibited from bringing any amount of liquids, gels or aerosols in carry-on luggage. At other Chinese airports (for example, Guangzhou, Shanghai or Hong Kong), liquids and gels are allowed, but the 3-1-1 rule is being enforced.
No lighters or matches are allowed on board, and lithium batteries are limited to two spares.
Carry-on bags are limited to 20x40x55cm (7¾"x15¾"x212⁄3") in size and no more than five kilos (11 lbs.). Only one bag per person is being allowed for economy and business class; however, on domestic flights, first-class passengers can take two bags.
