Clothing for Travelers: Seeking Security

By Ed Reynolds
This item appears on page 50 of the January 2015 issue.

Ever since I had a passport stolen at Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris, France, I’ve purchased travel clothing with security in mind.

Number one is my SCOTTeVEST (866/909-8378, www.scottevest.com)

To get recommendations on other secure clothing, I went to Holloway Travel Outfitters (1150 Fulton Ave., Sacramento, CA 95825; 916/486-9170, www.packinglight.net). They recommended, from Royal Robbins (800/587-9044, www.royalrobbins.com), Expedition long- and short-sleeved SHIRTS, which have dual secured document pockets. The shirts are UPF 50+ and dry very fast.

When I’m not visiting Sacramento, I purchase the shirts online through Royal Robbins. They come in a variety of colors and are now all I wear on my trips.

I also wear Royal Robbins’ “Zip N’ Go” PANTS, which are UPF 50+ and have a hidden zip pocket. I can wash them out in my room, hang them up and they’ll dry overnight.

For UNDERWEAR, I use ExOfficio (800/644-7303, www.exofficio.com), which I can purchase at any travel or sporting goods store. They’re easy to wash, and they dry quickly.

When traveling to hot climates, I wear Columbia (800/622-6953, www.columbia.com) Omni-Freeze UNDERSHIRTS, made with a long-lasting “cooling technology.” Columbia also sells other Omni-Freeze clothing and hats.
