Egypt military attacked

In and around the northern Egyptian city of Sheikh Zuweid, groups allied with the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) targeted five military bases and a police checkpoint in coordinated attacks on July 1.

Egyptian army officials said that at least 17 people, including soldiers and police officers, were killed, though other sources put the number of military dead at more than 50. Officials also said that more than 100 militants were killed.

Officials reported that IS militants used a car bomb and mortars in their attacks and may have captured some soldiers. An IS statement said that 15 sites had been targeted.
