The Hill of Crosses north of Siauliai, Lithuania

The Hill of Crosses
Reverent display — Twelve kilometers north of Siauliai, Lithuania, the Hill of Crosses stands as a testament to a people’s faith… and persistence. Repeatedly bulldozed to the ground by the KGB during the Communist era, the crosses always reappeared. Today there are thousands upon thousands of them — a “forest” of crosses of every size and material.

Ninety-five readers sent in the correct answer (and most said they had visited the site). The winner of the drawing was JUDITH KING of San Diego, California, a Lifetime Subscriber. We thank Jackie Korbholz of Stockton, California, for sending us the photo.

Sculpture of the giant troll Gudar

Fe, fi, fo, fum. . . .

December’s picture is a 40- foot metal sculpture of the giant troll Gudar.

Legend has it that Gudar used a big rock to carve out the Gudena River Valley in central Jutland, Denmark. He stands today near the Norgaards Hojskole (school) in the town of Bjerringbro.

Reader Barrett Rich of Tampa, Florida, sent in the picture (Thank you) and warned us that it might be a “really tough location” to guess. He was right — no guesses were received by press time.

Tuareg Uprising Peace Memorial, Republic of Mali

Tuareg Uprising Peace Memorial

Frank A. Kanka of Portage, Michigan, traveled all the way to Timbuktu (Tombouctou) to snap November’s photo. It’s the Tuareg Uprising Peace Memorial, or the “Flamme de la Paix,” located at the edge of the Sahara Desert in the Republic of Mali.

Mr. Kanka says, “The Tuareg, also known as the Blue People of the Sahara Desert, rebelled against the central governments of Mali and Niger in the early and mid-1990s. When the rebellion in Mali ended, weapons were symbolically burned in a pyre and this memorial was built.

No guesses were received by press time. Better luck with this month’s picture!

Norman Castle Tower in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England

The Norman Castle Tower

October’s photo. . . stumped our readers! For the first time in 2005, no one at all sent in a guess for our “Where in the World?” entry by press time.

Quick, before you read the answer, take a guess!

The photo is the Norman Castle Tower in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England.

Carl H. Haag of Princeton, New Jersey, sent in the picture, noting, “The 17-degree angle of the list of the tower is three times that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. By the way, Bridgnorth has a high town and a low town connected by a cliff railroad.”

Lost in translation. . . “EOLE” is the title of this sculpture by Clélia Bettua pictured in the August ’05 issue, and it is located in Lake Geneva, on the promenade in Lausanne, Switzerland.

There is no English equivalent for the name. JANET TREMAINE of San Diego, California, had the only correct answer. Congratulations!

The Amber Fort near Jaipur, India

A Garden of Earthly Delights — July’s photo shows the Kesar Kyari Bagh, a garden named for the rare saffron flowers which once grew in the star-shaped terraced beds.

It’s at the Amber Fort near Jaipur, India.

Twenty-five readers came “close” to the correct answer (citing the general location but not the name of the garden).

Three answers were right on target, and of these JANE HOLT of Hinesburg, Vermont, won the drawing.

We thank Tressie Alvernaz of Lakeside, California, for supplying the photo.

Peles Castle in Sinaia, Romania

Peles Castle

Summertime, and the livin’ is. . . royal! Or so it must have been for King Carol I of Romania and his Queen, Elizabeth, at the site depicted in June’s photo.

It’s Peles Castle in Sinaia, completed in 1883 as the royal family’s summer residence (and King Carol’s permanent home — he’s buried there).

Thirty-five readers successfully identified the photo. The winners of the drawing are ELIZABETH and ED MATHIAS of Stevensville, Maryland.

Our thanks to Lissa Harrison of Discovery Bay, California, for sending us the photograph.
