My friend Kathy, a computer whiz, went online and checked locations and ratings from the past guests for bed-and-breakfasts in ITALY. For our March ’07 trip we stayed in Rome, Naples and Venice, and all three B&Bs were great and affordable.

• BedinArt (Via In Selci, 63, 00184, Roma, Italy; phone +39 06 4885598 or 339-3232975 or visit www.bedinart.it) is located one stop from the Termi on the B Line of the metro in Rome. It’s a one-block walk from the Cavorn metro stop, and the Colosseum was one stop away. There were buses and restaurants all over, yet on this side street it was...

We’ve been to Venice six times, and the perfect hotel if you’re arriving by car or departing on a cruise is Hotel Cá Doge (Piazzale Roma, Sest. Santa Croce 467/e, 30135 Venice, ITALY; phone +39 041 5286 975, fax 041 2410 865, www.cadoge.it).

Its location, Piazzale Roma, is where all vehicle traffic coming into Venice must stop. You can drive to the hotel’s front door, and the hotel is adjacent to all the parking ramps. You have the shortest-possible taxi ride to the cruise ship terminal, and you only have to walk 50 yards from the hotel to catch a taxi to the airport. Also, a walk...

In Budapest, we stayed in the excellent Hotel Victoria (Bem rkp 11, 1011 Budapest, Hungary; phone +36 1 457 8080, fax 457 8088, www.victoria.hu). It’s on the Buda side of the Danube, right on the waterfront.

During our stay in March ’08, a single room with facilities en suite cost €91 ($141) and a double, €96 ($149), breakfast included. Credit cards accepted. English spoken.

The views were terrific. The hotel is in an excellent location for catching a Danube river cruise boat. For example, the Uniworld dock was a 5-minute, 10-dollar taxi ride from the hotel.

On our trip to western FRANCE in May ’06, we stayed in two places that were especially noteworthy.

• Located in a quiet part of medieval Dinan in Bretagne is Hôtel Arvor (5 rue A. Pavie, Dinan 22100, France; phone 33 [0] 2 96 39 21 22, fax 83 09 or visit www.hotel-arvor-dinan.com). The hotel is within walking distance of the town’s primary attractions, and there is free parking.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Room rates were very reasonable: €50-€70 ($64-$90) per person including breakfast. We stayed in the very large room No. 31 on the top floor, which is serviced...

On a 2-week trip to Ecuador in January ’06, my wife, Barbara, and I chose to splurge a bit and stay in Hacienda Cusín (visit www.haciendacusin.com or phone U.S. rep, Myths & Mountains, at 800/670-6984), near Lago San Pablo and about 10 kilometers southeast of Otavalo. We reserved a few days prior to arrival by calling from our hotel in Otavalo; we used a local number: 918-013. (Our Cingular GMS phone worked fine in Ecuador.)

This is a beautifully converted 17th-century hacienda, the oldest part of which dates from 1602. It was completely renovated in 1990 for the purpose of...

My husband and I went to Warsaw, POLAND, in March ’07 and were pleasantly surprised.

We stayed in Warsaw’s Old Town and were able to walk everywhere. English appeared to be the common second language, at least in the major cities, and we did not experience any language problems. The Polish people with whom we had contact were very helpful and friendly.

We rented a holiday apartment with Duval Serviced Apartments (Ul. Nowomiejska 10, 00-271 Warszawa, Polska; phone +48 22 849 70 24, fax 22 831 91 04, www.duval.net.pl). Only a block from the Old Town square, it was in an old...

Here are recommendations from a November ’07 trip to the Campania area of ITALY.

• Hostel Hotel Bella Capri (Via Melisurgo, 4, Gate B, 6th Floor, Naples, Italy; phone/fax +39 081 552 92 65, www.bellacapri.it).

This combination hostel/hotel (there were a few private rooms with bath) is just off the waterfront, convenient to boats to and from Capri and also the bus to Pompeii.

Rooms, each with a small bathroom, were minimal but decent. Some rooms faced the bay and busy street so were relatively noisy, added to the sound from the reception area adjacent. Number 7 was much...

On our trip to ROMANIA in August ’07, my wife, Margi, and I flew into Bucharest, were met at the airport and were driven to Count Kálnoky’s Estate (Miklósvár, Romania; phone 0040 742 202586, fax 0040 267 314088, www.transylvanian castle.com).

The Kálnoky family had owned a hunting manor and a residential manor and relied on two villages for food and workers but fled after the Communist takeover. Now some of the family has returned and begun to either repurchase or lease the lodge, the manor and some of the village properties.

The intent is to buy all food from the local...
