When in Amsterdam, we cannot imagine staying anywhere else but this Private Apartment (728 Prinsengracht, 1017 LB, Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS; phone +31 [0] 20-4203314 or [0] 638303660, e-mail lhaak@live.nl, www.prinsengracht728.nl).

For our 2-week stay, March 20-April 3, 2008, we paid €950 ($1,475). She gave us a discount for our long stay; the usual rate is €600 per week.

The location is absolutely the best, right on a canal in a quiet neighborhood with convenient shops nearby. You are away from the tourist crowds but close enough to walk to most museums and other attractions....

Usually, the ships that cruise in Russia are rather sparse in amenities, unless you upgrade to a suite, but our cabin aboard the M/S Tikhi Don, with Grand Circle Travel (347 Congress Ave., Boston, MA 02210; 800/959-0405, www.gct.com), had regular beds, a TV, a Western-style bath, a phone, an in-room safe, a fridge, two chairs and a table as well as closet space. We even had great reading lights above the beds, which we’ve never seen before. We chose the middle deck, where the cabins are 150 square feet and each have a picture window.

We sailed on the Tikhi Don on Grand Circle’s 16-...

I enjoyed a 2-week trip to SWITZERLAND in September ’05 and recommend the following places to stay. They are each a great value in a country where a small bottle of water sells for $4 and mailing a postcard costs $1.44.

• Hôtel de Sonloup (1833 Les Avants sur Montreux, Switzerland; phone 011 41 21 964 34 31, fax 964 34 80 or visit www.sonloup.com) is perched on a knoll; your room will overlook either the Alps or Lake Geneva. My single room with bath cost CHF90 ($72) per night, with breakfast. Swiss hotel prices include tax and tip.

At the hotel, lunch of perch, sole, rice,...

I stayed in a room rented by Anka Markunovic (Antuninska 10, 20000 Dubrovnik, CROATIA; phone/fax 00 385 20 417 877, e-mail markunovic@hotmail.com or visit www.dubrovnik-online.com/rooms_vicelic), Sept. 26-30, ’05.

From the airport I took the city bus, which meets passengers outside of the door from luggage pickup after every flight. I got off after 25 kilometers at the first stop, at the entrance to the old walled city, and the ride cost HRK25 ($4).

Anka’s rooms were very clean, nice and newly remodeled. Single, HRK250 ($40), or double, HRK350 ($56). Hot plate, electric...

Of the cities we visited while touring Rajasthan, INDIA, in January ’06, we liked Jodhpur best of all. It was less touristy than the other places, and it had a great fort and a very lively market area with a clock tower.

Throughout our trip, we noticed that ATMs were few and far between. We used travelers’ checks.

The food everywhere was wonderful and cheap.

Here are six hotels we stayed at. All were quite satisfactory, and the rooms each had a private bath with a Western toilet.

• Hotel Ajanta (36, Arakashan Road, Ram Nagar, NEW DELHI, 110055 India; phone +91 [...

When I saw that their e-mail address was “frogetrosbif,” I knew we’d enjoy staying at La Belle Demeure (Le Bouscot, 24250 St. Cybranet, FRANCE; phone 5 53 28 57, e-mail frogetrosbif@wanadoo.fr or visit www.labelledemeure.com). “Frog” is English slang for the French, and “rosbif” is what the French call the English, so I could tell our hosts would represent both nationalities and have a sense of play as well!

The B&B is in the tiny town of St. Cybranet in the midst of the most fascinating and scenic part of the Dordogne Valley, only a few minutes from the charms...
