For a visit to ROME I tried renting an apartment for the first time, as I was traveling with my son and his family and we needed accommodations for six. I was very fortunate to find a charming 2-story apartment at No. 45 Via Labicana through VRBO International, LLC (Vacation Rentals by Owner) (9800 Buccaneer Mall, Ste. 1, St. Thomas, USVI 00802-2409; visit www.vrbo.com).

Our apartment was listing No. 32035. The location was ideal for walking to Roman sites and to public transport, and we found a wide variety of food shops and restaurants in the area.

The apartment was every...

While in Prague, five of us stayed at the Guesthouse Lida (Lopatecká 26, Praha 4, Podoli 140 00, CZECH REPUBLIC; phone/fax [420] 261 214 766, e-mail lidabb@seznam.cz or visit http://sweb.cz/pensionlida) — a 5-minute walk from the efficient Prague metro.

Hosts Jan and Jitka Prouza were friendly and extremely helpful. I asked for a discounted price during our July ’05 stay, and we paid CZK1,580 ($60) per night for a double room and CZK1,290 ($50) per night for a single, including breakfast. (Prices on website in 2006 are CZK1,760 for a double and CZK1,380 for a single.) There was a...

I booked the Central Railway Hotel (240 Chalmers St., Sydney, NSW 2000, AUSTRALIA; phone 612-9319 7800, fax 1004 or visit www.centralrailway.com) on the Internet.

This was the least-desirable accommodation I experienced on my entire 2-week trip, March 12-26, ’06. The room cost was reasonable, Aus$85 (US$62), but not a good value. The hotel was almost empty, but they put me in a room that was closet-sized. I was offered an opportunity to upgrade for an additional fee, but I declined.

• For future reference, the next day I found...

We did a 10-night self-driving tour of SCOTLAND in May ’05 and, without exception, saw great scenery, met wonderful people and dined well. We rented a mid-sized Ford Mondeo automatic in Edinburgh from Arnold Clark Automobiles, Ltd. (call 0141 422 2700 or visit www.arnoldclarkrental.co.uk), chosen because full insurance coverage and VAT was included at a reasonable rate: £190 (near $343) for eight days. Arnold Clark has two locations in Edinburgh, one of which serves the Edinburgh airport via van pickup.

We booked all of the accommodations ourselves six to...

The ryokan is located in Momijidani Park above the town and just below the cable car station.

Miyajima, which is easily accessible by ferry from Hiroshima’s port, is a popular destination for local sightseers, with several lovely temples (such as...

For the past three years, we have explored the REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA during its so-called “secret season” of October. We have been awed by most all of the country’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites and even more impressed by the spirit and graciousness of the South African people.

The South African economy remains hopeful and dynamic, even though the unemployment rate is growing among the poorest of the nation’s population. Crime and social problems are fueled by a constant stream of immigrants from some of the world’s poorest nations that border South Africa, and the scourge of HIV...
