My wife, Paula, and I had the pleasure of spending two nights at Pension Mayer (Zeleska cesta 7, Bled, SLOVENIA; phone 386 [0] 4 576 57 40 or visit www.mayer-sp.si), a beautiful and splendidly renovated 19th-century house in a quiet neighborhood away from the busy traffic that blights much of Bled. The grounds include a well-maintained and attractive garden that added to the quaint and relaxing atmosphere.

There was plenty of free parking. The inn has an elevator, but we needed it only when we were transporting our luggage.

Our comfortable attic room had lots of character and...

The Rose Hotel (118 Surawongse Rd., Bangkok, 10500, THAILAND; phone [66] 02 266-8268-72, fax 266-8096 or visit www.rosehotelbkk.com) was a great little hotel for the price. I paid about THB1,600 ($40) for my single room in December ’05. The hotel is located in the heart of the night market and has a restaurant, Rose Hip Dining Space.

We spent the night of June 27, ’04, at the B&B Churchill Guest House (6 Castle Hill Rd., Dover, Kent, CT16 1QN, U.K.; phone +44 [0] 1304 208365, e-mail ch6chr@aol.com or visit www. albetclevehomestead.com). This is not to be confused with the Churchill Hotel, which is downtown in Dover and quite a bit more pricey.

I recommend Churchill House very highly. We found it to be delightful, well furnished, comfortable and very conveniently located. Prices ranged from £35 ($65) for a single with facilities en suite to £70 ($130) for the “Clementine” room with a...

We spent three days on Cheung Chau, CHINA, a small island that is a 40-minute ferry ride from Hong Kong Central, in early December ’05. We stayed at the Warwick Hotel (East Bay, Cheung Chau; phone [852] 2981 0081, fax 2981 9673 or visit www.warwick hotel.com.hk).

We were personally greeted by Maggie Ma, Director of Sales & Marketing, who bought lunch for us on our arrival and did everything she could to make us comfortable. We made our advance reservations directly with her via e-mail (maggiema@fareasthotels.com.hk) and paid HK$600 (about US$77) per night, including the service...

The apartment at 13 rue de la Providence in Nice, FRANCE (call Gerald Bedrich in the U.K. at [0033] [0] 626140006 or 493319297 [up to 9 p.m. U.K. time] or visit www.nice studios.co.uk), is in a great location in the Vieux Nice (Old Town).

It’s very near the Gare Routière bus stop, convenient for taking day trips by bus and for the city’s public transit. The Gare Lycée and Garibaldi stops are also nearby. There is a bus that goes directly from the airport to Gare Routière.

The apartment is up a hill, but the owner will meet you at the Gare Routière and point out the route...

Let me tell you about a tropical paradise my husband found on the Internet: Taman Harum Cottages (Box 3216, Ubud, Bali, INDONESIA; phone [62-361] 975567, fax 975149 or visit www.tamanharumcottages.com). The owner/manager is Ib Hariyana (Hari, for short).

Everyone had their own bungalow with an upstairs patio that overlooked miles of impressive green rice paddies. Our bathroom was like a semi-outdoor grotto, with lush plants and high boulders giving us complete privacy. During our stay in November ’05, the room rate was $45 a day.

The restaurant was charming and the food,...

My favorite chambre d’hôte in FRANCE is Le Lot (46320 Issepts, France; phone 011 33 [0] 5 65 40 17 61 or e-mail catherineissepts@wanadoo. fr). This is in the Quercy region, just south of the beautiful Dordogne area; Quercy is just as pretty and not as expensive as the Dordogne. Even with the unfavorable exchange rate, you can have a great vacation here for far less than in most regions in France. Our most recent visit was in December ’05.

Madame Catherine Grisé, Le Lot’s owner, has become a good friend over the years since my first visit in 2001. Anglo-French, she is a marvelous...

We had a lovely stay at the recently remodeled Hotel St. Josef (Hirschengraben 64/68, CH-8001 Zürich, SWITZERLAND; phone 044 250 57 57 or visit www.st-josef.ch) in November ’05.

The hotel is just a 5-minute walk uphill (remember this when you pack) from Zürich’s Hauptbahnhof. It was an easy commute from the train station, and unless you are lost or it is raining, there’s no need for a cab. Go to the St. Josef’s website for directions and a map.

Our cheerful room offered a desk and chair, a big bathroom with shower and a Swiss-style double bed (two twin beds with separate...
