My wife and I took our seventh trip in eight years to Thailand, Dec. 5, 2009-Jan. 13, 2010, and we noticed something new regarding paying for hotel rooms with a credit card.

In the past, when we paid for our room using our credit card, we always were charged in Thai baht, and, of course, by using a Capital One credit card we avoided the currency-exchange fee as charged by all the other card issuers.

This year, however, we noticed that right on the credit card slip that one is asked to sign, a conversion had been made to US dollars, with two notations. The first tells you that...

The letter titled “Private Shore Tours” (April ’10, pg. 14) was written by a traveler with a preference for taking independently arranged excursions as opposed to ones purchased from a cruise ship.

My response — the benefit of booking tours directly through the ship can be summarized in a few words: the ship’s staff knows where you are.

Although saving money is, indeed, a virtue, there certainly are hazards inherent in going on your own.

In the western Caribbean with Costa Cruises three years ago, I made arrangements through the ship to take an excursion out of Cozumel...

For a recent trip to France and Italy, arranged on short notice, I decided to book all hotels ahead of time. I had considerable benefit from using a site called Venere.com.

The site is not a “bargain” or auction site. The hotel presents the offer at a given price, take it or leave it. Nor is it a guide, like Michelin. The site does not rate the hotels but simply presents the hotel’s estimation of itself, together with user comments, some of them quite savage. In most cases, I was able to find a suitable hotel.

You tell the site the city, dates and general class of hotel you...

In our 40 years of travel, my wife, Arnette, and I have never had a more perfectly planned and executed trip than our five-country, five-week independent East Africa experience, July 27-Aug. 28, 2009.

Julie of Tribes Travel, Ltd. (12 Business Centre, Earl Soham, Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK; phone 01728 685971), planned the trip. The dramatic feature was NO glitches for any day of the trip. You will be in good hands with her planning.

We visited Rwanda and its gorillas plus Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Malawi. The tour cost, not including international airfare, was $41,062 for...

ITN asked for those who are mobility challenged and enjoy cruising to write in (Feb. ’10, pg. 68).

My husband, Leon, and I have taken many cruises, on both large and small ships, the most recent one a Mediterranean cruise in October ’08. Leon uses a wheelchair and we normally book a handicapped cabin.

In our experience, so far as space available in which to move around, the cabins on Celebrity and Princess ships were more wheelchair-friendly than Carnival’s.

Here are the things to look out for:

• distance from your cabin to the dining room (people with walkers...

I read the letter titled “India Travel Tips” (Dec. ’10, pg. 51) and strongly disagree with most of the advice given on what not to eat and drink.

I’m a senior traveler. In 1990 I spent three months traveling all over India on a railpass. For all my train journeys, I always filled up my water bottle at the public fountain, just like everyone else; I did not buy bottled water. At the zoo I bought cups of ice water. I didn’t get sick from that either! I stayed at youth hostels, YMCAs and YWCAs and ate local fare, including lettuce, tomatoes and veggies.

Now, due to the “rock...

I have traveled extensively overseas and have never run into any problems using my US credit cards. I usually use my Capital One Visa, as I think I get better rates with it. I never use debit cards.

A few years ago in Denmark, a chocolate shop wouldn’t take my American Express card. The store owner told me they could send their Visa and MasterCard charges in one package and the processing center would separate them, but American Express wouldn’t cooperate, so the store just didn’t accept AmEx.

Also, I never notify my credit card issuers that I’m going someplace. It seems to...

Many Americans will visit Normandy on June 6, ’04, for events surrounding the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

A few winters ago, sans crowds, I explored the Normandy landing sites and was astonished to see surfers riding the waves there. Even more bizarre was my discovery of the Omaha Beach Golf Club. Not a golfer myself, I raided the pro shop for an Omaha Beach golf shirt, one which never fails to draw comments.

As a U.S. Marine, now retired, I also must point out that in June 1918, during WWI, two regiments (a division has three) of Marines counterattacked five German divisions...
