Accommodations Worldwide

In early June ’02, three of us spent 10 nights in 10 different places “doing” eight countries! I’d like to share some of them; they were “winners!” Prices listed include breakfast and tax.

We flew on a charter, Air Transat, from Toronto to Frankfurt, GERMANY, for $485. We all agreed this was the most cramped flight we had ever been on, and they had just discontinued serving complimentary wine with meals.

Our car rental was through AutoEurope (phone 888/223-5555 or visit www.autoeurope.com). A standard-shift Ford Focus cost $362 for 10 days, including a surcharge for the...

I read in the October ’03 issue, page 65, about Los Alpes Hotel (233 Tamayoy George Washington, Quito, ECUADOR; phone [593-2] 2 561-110, e-mail losalpes@ecuadorexplorer.com or visit www.hotellosalpes.com). The reader said it was his favorite place in Quito — and now it’s my favorite, too.

I booked a reservation starting Dec. 15, ’03, and a taxi was waiting for me at the airport in Quito ($7 to the hotel; Ecuador uses only American currency). I was royally greeted and accommodated.

My very, very nice accommodation for three nights, three breakfasts and one great supper with...

Hotel Waldhaus (3992 Bettmeralp, SWITZERLAND; phone ++ 41 [0] 927 27 17, e-mail waldhaus@bettmeralp.ch or visit www.bettmeralp.ch/waldhaus), located in the Aletsch region, high up on the ridge between the Rhone and the Aletsch Glacier, not known to many Americans. This is ideal hiking country, with many gondolas and lifts to get you even higher.

Access to the hotel is by aerial tram from Betten, a train stop on the valley floor (no cars are allowed up in the village).

The hotel is owned and run by Herr and Frau Berchtold, who speak English and offer friendly personal...

The Arosfa Hotel (83 Gower St., London WC1E 6HJ, ENGLAND; phone/fax 020 7636 2115), located a 5-minute walk from Goodge Street Underground Station, is more a B&B than a hotel, in my opinion. It is one of several small hotels along busy Gower Street. I would recommend requesting a room in the back of any of them, as Gower Street has traffic noise most of the time.

The rate was £45 ($83) per night, single. All rates posted at the Arosfa refer to rooms with facilities en suite, and accommodations range from singles to quads. Breakfast is included.

You’ll find no elevator,...

If you plan to visit Cusco, PERU, I’d like to recommend a charming hotel called Torre Dorada (Calle Los Cipreses N-5, Huancaro, Cusco, Peru; phone 51 84 241 698, fax 51 84 224 255, e-mail reservas@torredorada.com or visit www.torrdorada.com.pe).

This is a fairly new little B&B-type hotel located away from the city noise. I stayed there in June ’03 and June ’00. It was extremely clean and well run. Rates were $54 single, $60 double and $68 triple.

The owner is fluent in English, Spanish and French and will do everything she can to make your stay enjoyable. Her personal e-...

On March 12, ’03, my three sisters-in-law and I began a trip that had been in the making for over two years. We flew to southern France, via Paris, for one week of horseback riding at Domaine du Soleil (Route de Villesque, 30610 Sauve, France; phone 0033-0466804515, cell phone 06-82658301 or e-mail barbara.gahn@wanadoo.fr), a large estate on 70 acres of land and home to horses, goats, pigs, chickens, five dogs and one burro. Each of us varied in our riding skills but shared a common willingness to do our best, not a small thing for four women in their 50s.

We began our journey from...

For those of you who want to visit Hadrian’s Wall, the Roman fort of Vindolanda and Northumbria, ENGLAND, an excellent B&B named Montcoffer (Bardon Mill, Hexham, Northumberland, U.K.; phone +44 [0] 1434 344138, e-mail stay@montcoffer.co.uk or visit www.montcoffer.co.uk) is worth your consideration. It’s a 10-minute drive from the Roman Museum, Hadrian’s Wall and Vindolanda.

The accommodation is 5-star AA, with the bedrooms (all with facilities en suite) separate from the main house in a completely renovated stable block. Everything is spotless and relatively new (1999).

In September ’03 my wife and I stayed seven nights at the Jedermann Hotel (Bayerstrasse 95, 80335 München, GERMANY; phone +49 89 54 32 40, e-mail info@hotel-jedermann.de or visit www.hotel-jedermann.de).

The Jedermann has been owned and operated by the Jenke family for over 40 years. It is located a 5- to 10-minute walk from the Munich central rail station and within a short walk of the Oktoberfest field and the not-to-be-missed Augustina brewery, beer hall and restaurant.

Our room, with facilities en suite, cost €125 ($141) per night. Other rooms with shower and toilet down...
