Middle East articles

I was saddened to read in the “News Watch” section of the January ’06 issue about the shooting of the tourist on Nov. 8, 2005, in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda. I had completely missed any mention of it in my local newspaper, The Washington Post, so I looked it up online.
The January ’06 article by Janet Denninger on photography in Antarctica made me recall a trip my wife and I made there several years ago (pre-digital cameras).

Dear Globetrotter: Welcome to the 365th issue of your monthly overseas travel magazine.
A “must see” in Bodrum, Turkey, is the Museum of Underwater Archeology, housed in the Castle of St. John.
Based on my April ’06 trip to Iran, I’d like to share three practical tips with ITN readers who are thinking of going there.
Our group of five left Atlanta, Georgia, on Aug. 19, ’05, for a 16-day cruise from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Moscow with Peter the Great Cruises (2610 East 16th St., Brooklyn, NY 11235; 800/828-7970 or 718/934-4100 or www.cruiseruss.com).
I visited several countries in the Arabian Peninsula, including the United Arab Emirates, in early December ’05.
We took a trip to Libya with Distant Horizons (Long Beach, CA; 800/333-1240), an ITN advertiser. We were quite fortunate to have received visas, which arrived at almost the last minute. Other tours had to be canceled because the Libyans had not issued visas for those groups.
